UN-Habitat unveil new platform for reconstruction and development in Iraq
After a year of development, the Government of Iraq, in collaboration with the UN-Habitat, unveiled a new platform that provides up-to-date information on reconstruction and development projects.
The National Platform for Reconstruction and Development is a web-based GIS data system, containing analytic reports, statistical data for projects, and interactive maps of project locations. The primary objective of this being to clarify Iraq’s priorities and needs in terms of projects by maximising the use of spatial information.
H.E. Dr. Mahdi Al-Allaq, Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, stated that:
“The Platform will advance delivery of the commitments made at the Kuwait International Conference for Reconstruction of Iraq”.
The platform, while aimed at key decision makers to improve coordination for better planning, is also available to the general public. Members of the public are encouraged to interact with the platform, providing feedback on projects, with hopes of strengthening the trust between the government and people.
H.E. Dr. Noori Al-Dulaimi, Minister of Planning, commented that:
“Through the Platform, projects will be managed in a transparent manner and monitored by the international community”.
The platform is in line with Iraq’s commitments following the Kuwait International Conference for Reconstruction of Iraq, held in February 2018. The conference, which generated almost USD 30 billion of international support following ISIL's territorial defeat in 2017, focused on the physical and human dimensions of reconstruction, including infrastructure, private investment and societal issues such as humanitarian needs, social protection, good governance and accountability.
